How to Prevent Affiliate Marketing Failures

You shouldn’t be discouraged if your first attempts at affiliate marketing aren’t wildly successful. Like almost anything, affiliate marketing is a learned skill and you shouldn’t set your expectations too high on your first few attempts.

Yes there will always be some outliers that nail it on their first go, but they’re in the minority and more often than not, just plain lucky!

There are a lot of valuable lessons that can be learned from failed affiliate marketing, if you pay attention. Once you’ve worked out where you’ve gone wrong there’s no reason why you can’t get back on the horse and turn your past failures into future success.

Learn From Your Failures

Failure is part of life, and this is especially true when first starting out in affiliate marketing. The trick is to put any unsuccessful campaigns behind you, learn from them and use them to refine your future strategies.

Once you have narrowed down a method that works for you, you’ll essentially have a framework that you can draw upon to help shape how you approach affiliate marketing in future.

To give yourself the best chance of affiliate marketing success, read our tips on how to use bad experiences to tune your affiliate marketing strategy and make failure a thing of the past. It will likely take some trial and error, but the rewards will make it worth it in the end.

Pro-Tip: Look for High Paying Affiliate Programs that offer reoccurring revenue streams!

Get Educated

To give yourself the best chance of success and help prevent potentially costly failures in the first place, you should have at least a basic idea of what you’re doing and how affiliate marketing works.

Most of us don’t have the luxury of jumping straight in and sacrificing money in order to purely learn on the job. Sure, you can’t beat practical experience, but if you can minimise how long it takes you to get up to speed and therefore making more money, then it makes sense to do some study first.

There are countless affiliate marketing courses available online, and you’d be remiss to not check at least one of them out. It will be an investment that will more than pay for itself as you’ll be able to hit the ground running.

Ride it Out

It’s easy to convince yourself that if an affiliate campaign isn’t immediately successful that it’s going to be a failure. Don’t be so sure! Sometimes they some time to find their feet, so be patient. Resist the temptation to tweak a campaign before it’s had a real chance to take off. Give it a decent amount of time and monitoring before you make any changes or pull the plug.

If you’ve given it a good solid run and the numbers just aren’t stacking up, then by all means try new things to see if they help. Remember, don’t change too many things at once, otherwise when you do find success you won’t know exactly what to attribute it to!

Hard Numbers are Your Friend

Basing affiliate marketing decisions on gut instincts alone is a sure-fire way to ensure your campaigns fails. While there’s undeniably a place in affiliate marketing for some decisions to be based on emotion, numbers and facts are an infinitely wiser choice in the vast majority of cases.

An inability to properly evaluate data is a huge missed opportunity and can be the difference between success and failure.

Data can explain what’s not working, what is working, what’s worth testing and can identify trends and opportunities for future campaigns. It allows you to discover valuable insights that can explain why your campaign bombed or why it was an unexpected triumph. It can even help you identify cases where you can find no results at all, such as when there are incorrectly configured attribution setups.

If you can become proficient in analysing your campaign data, you’ll learn more from your failures and take a giant leap towards affiliate marketing success.

Take Responsibility

It’s easy to blame the offer if a campaign fails. However, the fact of the matter is that you would have reviewed and approved any offer before agreeing to enter an affiliate partnership. Assuming you gave this process the full attention it deserves, you must accept that no blame lies with the offer. While it’s absolutely true that not all offers are created equal, the fact that you signed off on it means that all responsibility lies with you.

If you’re not getting the results you expect then it’s up to you to work out where it’s going wrong and how it can be remedied. It might take some time and practice to work out how to identify what you’re doing wrong and how to right it, which leads us to the next point.

All marketing is an exercise in perseverance. The whole point of testing, re-testing and trying new strategies is to try and find out what works best. Without perseverance, there is no success in marketing.

Affiliate marketing is no different. It’s unrealistic to expect that you’ll be a pro without committing to the hard graft first. If you don’t try and try again, you’ll never learn what it takes to make your campaign a success. It will all be worth it in the end when your campaigns are successful and you have a great idea of what works and what to avoid in future campaigns.

Try these tips out yourself and we’re sure you’ll find that affiliate marketing success is within your grasp.

It takes effort and graft, but in the end it’s well worth the sacrifice!
